Many gamers, have disregarded Arcane in Elden Ring as the "item drop" stat only if they have ever taken the time to consider it. A lot of players early on have done this and, in all honesty, made some poor build choices as a result. But as soon as you comprehend WHAT ARCANE DOES IN ELDEN RING, you will start to see it as more than just an "item drop" stat - it has many uses including increasing your efficiency at farming, some of the best bleed setups require Arcane, or if you are doing Dragon Communion or Blood Incantations builds you will require Arcane as well. This guide will cover THE MECHANICS OF ARCANE so that you can understand how it works, what it scales, where its soft caps are, and at what point in the game is it worthwhile to level your Arcane.
WHAT DOES ARCANE DO IN ELDEN RING
Arcane has many different functions and that is one reason for its frequent misunderstandings; it is a utility that is much more niche than you think; Arcane touches on many things in the game, including farming, damage with weapons, status build-up, and a couple of defensive stats.
The most obvious effect is DISCOVERY; when you put 1 point of Arcane into your character you raise your discovery stat giving you a greater chance of enemies dropping items when killed. This means that if you are trying to farm rare crafting materials, rare pieces of armor, or rare smithing resources, this AFFECTS YOU MORE THAN YOU REALIZE. At low levels of Arcane farming can be very erratic compared to how farming would be at higher 50+ levels. When you add in the Silver Scarab or Silver-Pickled Fowl Foot combo, the difference is very easy to see.
After DISCOVERY comes WEAPONS AND SCALINGS, which is where Arcane becomes more than a side or utility stat becoming an actual damage stat. There are two ways for weapons to get Arcane scaling: naturally and by using infusions. If a weapon shows a stat for Arcane in its scaling section, it will give you increased attack ratings when you level your Arcane. The classic examples are Rivers of Blood, Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear, Eleonora's Poleblade, and Morgott's Cursed Sword. Regular weapons infused with Blood, Occult, or Poison are also transitioning to the Arcane territory.

However, the biggest relevant factor is status buildup / interaction. Arcane helps with building up status on enemies faster with some status effects, notably Hemorrhage and Poison, however it significantly increases Madness and Sleep status effects on some weapons in this category. So for instance, a weapon that may take several hits to proc hang at low Arcane may only take 2 or 3 hits before it hangs at 45 or 60 Arcane. For weapons that are quick to hit or dual-wield, this becomes a massive gain in power.
Arcane gives some passive defense as well. It increases the Holy damage negation and will assist you while fighting against various late-game enemies and bosses. It will also reduce Death Blight build-up as well; this is a more situational value, but when it is relevant, it is extremely relevant.
Arcane Scaling in Elden Ring Weapons and Seals
Not all weapons will utilize Arcane well, which is why there are many builds that go wrong. You need to discover if a weapon multiplies with Arcane, if the affinity changes the scaling of the weapon, and how much the upgrade level will change all of this.
The following table provides some critical details regarding the main Arcane scaling affinities:
| Affinity | Primary Scaling Stat | Added Effect | Can Apply Weapon Buffs? Tiers of Attributes and Stats
| Preceding Bonds/Tips | Arcane Affinities/Traits | Function of Preceding Bond/Tips to Arcane Attribute Trait | Affinities Applies?
|---------------------|--------------------------|------------------------------------|-------------------|
| Blood Affinity | Arcane | Imparts Bleed Build up | No
| Occult Affinity | Arcane | High Physical A. R. (raw power)| No
| Poison Affinity | Arcane | Imparts Poison Build Up | No
Blood Affinity - The default for bleed builds, shifting a weapons normal Strength/Dexterity scores to be more focused on Arcane while adding Bleeder build up if your weapon does not have it, to maximize the potential for procing. Usually the first place to start.
Occult Affinity - Scales Off of Arcane, Generally without adding a Status Effect, Gathering focus on Physical damage. Therefore many Occult builds will outclass a Blood build by pure A. R.
Poison Affinity - Works Like Blood Affinity but Converts the Weapon to an Arcane Scaling Weapon while providing you with an added effect, and builds Poisen Damage. This is not utilized as much as it used to be; however, still viable; especially for PvE.
Another Point of Interest - Dirty Cindy’s Dragon Communion Seal. As Good of a Castable as Anything on The Arcane Side of the Build, This One is Uniquely Different, The Dragon Communion Seal Scales Off of Arcane Were Most Sacred Seals Scale Off of Faith. At a +10 Seal, Dragon Communion Seals Have the Potential F. T. to go Greatly Above A. R. (Arcane) Compared to Other Seals (Great). Additionally, the 15% increase to Dragon Communion spells while holding the weapon in your off hand is significant for hybrid builds as well.
The level of the weapon's upgrade may impact how much benefit you receive from the Arcane stat more than many players think. An Arcane weapon with a base power of zero will not have much effect until at least +15, while using a Somber upgrade level will provide meaningful results by +7. After this upgrade level, the Arcane scaling effect becomes more pronounced, and continues to quickly increase until the weapon reaches the maximum upgrade level. So if you've been trying out an Arcane weapon and it has not felt particularly strong, you may want to consider the upgrade level as the reason rather than the Arcane stat.
Arcane Influence on Bleed, Poison, and Incantations
Bleed and Hemorrhage
Bleed is where Arcane gets most of its credibility, and for a good reason. Any weapon that has built-in bleed (due to a Blood affinity) works well with Arcane in that it will help to build up Hemorrhage at a much quicker rate. When the Hemorrhage meter fills, the target will take damage in relation to its Maximum HP (typically around 10-15% on Bosses, and potentially more against normal enemies). This is why bleed can be so effective against tank-style opponents.
When selecting between Blood affinity and Occult affinity when building your character around a weapon, consider what you want your weapon to do. For example, if you want your weapon to get a quicker build of Hemorrhaging bleed, you will want to go with Blood affinity; however, you will likely sacrifice some regular physical damage in the process. If you want better Attack Rating (AR) with some extra damage than you would normally get from Blood, you will want to go with Occult. Weapons in the Occult category that already have inherent bleed damage are enhanced by the fact that you can keep the base bleed and then add decent physical scaling based on Arcane.
The "Rivers of Blood" weapon is still probably the best example to use, even in the year 2026. The weapon is a great example because it has built-in scaling for Arcane and does not have any corresponding attributes related to different affinities; therefore Affinity scaling in this case is irrelevant. The weapon has the Corpse Piler skill which hits very quickly giving it excellent bleed stacking ability, plus it has excellent scaling with Arcane. If you plan to make Rivers of Blood your focus, 45 points in the Arcane attribute are generally viewed as a bare minimum requirement; 60 points should make any player feel that their weapon is complete and ready for use.

A lot of players who build around dual-wield bleed weapons for damage will choose to use a Bleed-infused weapon coupled with an Occult-infused weapon. This combination will help increase their overall Hemorrhage pressure while giving them a respectable amount of damage between proc triggers. This split is also a very efficient allocation of stats for Dexterity/Arcane builds.
Poison & Other Damages
Poison weapons act in the same way as the ones discussed above. With a Poison affinity weapon you will gain some amount of Arcane scaling, and you will also apply Poison buildup to every enemy (target) that you hit with each attack. The more Arcane scaling you have increases your rate of Poison build-up will be, and when the Poison proc triggers, the enemy will receive damage over time. The process of building poison damage is not nearly as explosive as bleed damage however persistent damage received from the poison build-up, will do considerable amounts of damage during the fight if the battle lasts long enough (e.g., further down in this section).
There are also two important exceptions: 1) However, Scarlet Rot and Frostbite do not scale similarly to the aforementioned examples. Frostbite and Scarlet Rot build-ups through spells such as Dragon Communion Spells (e.g., Rotten Breath; Ekzykes's Decay) damage and scaling is based on the attributes relative to the Dragon Communion Seals in order to help with the spell and that particular Dragon Communion Seal. However, the actual amount of rot buildup will be fixed (pre-set) based on how it is created through spell instances as described above. While Arcane increases the power of spells, it does not generally speed up the application of rot damage, and frostbite is completely different due to its connection to the weapon's base damage and Scaling by Cold affinity compared to Intelligence.
Madness and sleep cause a more complicated relationship with Arcane when attacking because some weapons and spells that apply these states of affliction are able to connect with Arcane more strongly than others; therefore, if you are trying to create a Madness or sleep build, it is best to verify whether Arcane behaves this way through a specific item rather than assuming that it will apply to all items in this way.
When it comes to incantations and seals, Arcane has much more of an impact on the way that certain builds using dragon communion incantations with incantations like Dragonfire, Dragonice, Rotten Breath, Ekzykes's Decay, Borealis's Mist, and Placidusax's Ruin, will function because they require both Faith and Arcane as prerequisites, and the Dragon Communion Seal uses both of these attributes as multiplies for damage; thus, Arcane is much more of a determining factor here than Faith.
Therefore, stacking Arcane excessively without having a proper amount of Faith will result in your Dragon Spells failing to achieve their potential; you want a true split of both of these attributes between Faith and Arcane to achieve maximum effectiveness from your Dragon spells.
Though not all Blood Incantations use the same mechanics, they derive their damage from the same split between Arcane vs/and Faith while also supporting the bleed from their respective encroachments every bit as much as dragon spell builds by virtue of the fact that your already using Arcane in the weapons to further increase the overall effectiveness of these types of items. #### Important considerations for casters relative to the faith and arcane choices
The trade-off between faith and arcane is based on the specialization of the build being here.
A faith-only build using an Erdtree seal will perform better with standard incantations than using an arcane-only build. On the other hand, for those players interested in dragons or blood magic (Dragon Communion), the value of arcane rises dramatically, making it the better option here as well as when using a Dragon Communion seal.
There is no denying that using the arcane-only seal would have a lower performance than a standard incantation build; however, it will work much better than any standard incantation build when set up correctly.
Top arcane breakpoint stats and paths for build configuration
Hitting the correct breakpoint for arcane is much more important than mindlessly increasing the arcane stat all the way up to the maximum value.
The reason why is that, like all offensive stats in Elden Ring, there are diminishing returns for every 90 stat points allocated to the arcane stat.
In addition to using the Stat Breakpoints, if you want to plan ahead, the Bandit Starter class is your best option for an arcane build. As a result of it's starting Arcane stat of 14.
The first major arcane breakpoint is 45. Beyond this point you have strong returns in terms of both status effects as well as weapon scaling.
The second major breakpoint is 60, you are still gaining returns and value; however, they are diminishing returns and will take much longer to get beyond this point if you are trying to use Dragon Communion Builds or heavily status effect oriented builds. At some point, plenty of builds are better served by stacking up additional Vigor, Endurance, Dexterity, or Faith, rather than continuing to stack Arcane.
Here are the two most typical Arcane paths:
-
Dex/Arc bleed path
-
Usually seeks approximately 50 Dexterity
-
Arcane comes in around 45 to 60
-
Typically uses Rivers of Blood combined with a Blood or Occult Uchigatana/Nagakiba
-
Dragon Communion Seal can serve as the offhand weapon for utility casting
-
-
Faith/Arc dragon path
-
Generally tries to hit 45 to 50 Faith
-
Arcane also hovers around 45 to 60
-
The Dragon Communion Seal becomes your main casting medium
-
Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear or another Arcane weapon provides melee pressure
-

If you're unsure where to stop, 45 Arcane is the safest option for the majority of builds. If Arcane is your central focus and not simply a side investment 60 will be the best option.
Is Arcane Leveling Worth It In Elden Ring
Yes, but only if your build actually utilizes what Arcane has to offer. This is not a universal stat. If everything is in the right configuration Arcane is fantastic but in the wrong configuration Arcane will be a wasted level.
For farming, Arcane is definitely worth investing in. Even at 25 to 30 Arcane, combined with the silver scarab, farming materials and hunting for unique drops will less of a pain than without. If you dedicate a lot of your time to gathering gear or creating resources, that alone is enough reason to consider a small investment.
For builds that rely on bleed, Arcane is almost required. It helps improve the amount of bleed that builds, increases damage from Arcane-scaling bleed weapons, and works extremely well with items such as Lord of Blood's Exultation. If you are trying to build a viable Hemorrhage without using Arcane, you miss out on a lot of damage.
For melee builds that use Heavy, Keen, or Quality affinities, and they do not centre around status, Arcane is of little to no value. A Strength build that hits things with a Heavy Giant-Crusher has no real value from Arcane. In other words, using points in those cases to increase your Strength, Vigor, or Endurance levels is a better use of your points.
If you have already completed a significant portion of the game, and you want to move in a different direction, you will have no issue doing so. Elden Ring allows for experimentation through the use of respecs (respecs). If you have defeated Rennala in the Raya Lucaria Academy, you can obtain a Larval Tear and use that to redistributing your stat points. You will find a total of about 18 Larval Tears throughout your playthrough, which gives you multiple opportunities to test out an Arcane-focused build before you commit to it.
Elden Ring FAQ - Arcane Related
Will Arcane increase bleed?
If done in the correct manner, yes. Arcane will increase the amount of bleed that is applied to a weapon, provided that it is a weapon that is capable of increasing the amount of bleed that is caused based on how the weapon scales with Arcane, or how the weapon is capable of obtaining Arcane scaling through Blood affinity. If a weapon does not demonstrate any form of interaction with Arcane based scaling, Arcane will not magically enhance the bleeding capability of that weapon.
Does Arcane work on all weapons?
No. Arcane only works with weapons which have an actual Arcane-based scaling option. Similarly, Standard, Heavy, Keen, and Quality weapons do not receive increases to damage from Arcane unless there is some type of special native scaling involved. Blood, Occult, Poison, and select unique weapons are the primary types of weapons that benefit from Arcane.
What would the best starter choose be for an Arcane build?
Generally, it is my opinion that the Bandit is preferably suited to assist in building an all Arcane build because they start with 14 Arcane as well as having very little to no wasted stats in areas of your characters stat allocation. Alternatively, if you want to create an Arcane build that includes Dexterity based damage, the Samurai is also a good recruitment choice based on positive Dexterity, along with using the Uchigatana for your weapon.
What is the best 2026 Arcane weapon?
There are still a few good choices available. The following items are among those few options:
-
Rivers of Blood has the purest form of bleed pressure available from all weapons.
-
Occult Uchigatana and Occult Nagakiba generate significant lifts in Arcane based melee damage.
-
A Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear is a solid weapon for power towards the end of the game, while being used actively with Bloodboon Ritual.
-
For Dragon builds, the Dragon Communion Seal +10 weapon is the best choice due to the effects of Ekzykes's Decay and Placidusax's Ruin.
Conclusion
Once you start to understand and experiment with the mechanics behind Arcane from a gameplay perspective, you will find that what does Arcane do in Elden Ring becomes much clearer to you. While many players see Arcane as purely a farmer stat that sits off to the side of their character, players that have built full-fledged characters that use Arcane (item discovery), Arcane scaling (powers several of the strongest bleed builds available), Arcane scaling (is used to bolster and support Dragon Communion as well as Blood incantations, resistance from Holy damage, and resistance from Death Blight). However, the one problem with this is that all of your builds do not include Arcane, so your build will not include Arcane as a legitimate part of the actual design. If you are building a bleed, poison, or faith/Arc build, finding the optimal combination of your build using Arcane will be a serious disruption to your game. If you have built a character that does not fall under any one of the above classifications, you can still safely ignore it. However, knowing how Arcane works does simplify the process of building your characters. Good luck on your journey, Tarnished.
